She is the author of Read My Lips: Sexual Subversion and the End of Gender. Clare Howell is a senior librarian at the Brooklyn Public Library.

samenvatting:	This study examined the relationships between social support, coping, depression, and anxiety in a sample of genderqueer individuals (n = 64). Genderqueer is a label used within the broader transgender community and is defined as a gender identity that is outside the binary construct of male and female. Findings indicate that 53% (n = 34) of participants reported clinical levels of depression and 39% (n = 25) reported clinical levels of anxiety. There was a direct relationship between social support and depression and anxiety, indicating that more social support is associated with less depression and anxiety when statistically excluding coping factors. In addition, more facilitative coping (e.g., seeking help) was related to less anxiety, whereas more avoidant coping (e.g., avoiding emotions) was related to more anxiety and depression. There was a significant interaction between social support and coping factors when predicting anxiety, such that individuals who reported higher social support used more facilitative coping which was associated with less anxiety and those who reported less social support used more avoidant coping which was associated with more anxiety. Clinical implications for working with genderqueer-identified clients are discussed.

samenvatting:	A U.S. national sample of 295 transgender adults (trans women, trans men, and genderqueer individuals) and their cisgender siblings completed the Bem Sex-Role Inventory about their siblings as well as themselves, which enabled a comparison between self-perceptions and sibling's perceptions of personality characteristics. Self-reported personality characteristics scored as feminine of trans women were not statistically different from those of their cisgender sisters, but they were significantly higher than self-reported femininity scores of trans men, genderqueer individuals, and cisgender brothers. Self-reported personality characteristics scored as masculine of trans men did not differ significantly from those of their cisgender brothers, but they were higher than those of trans women. Trans men and cisgender brothers were viewed by their siblings in a more sex-typed way than they rated themselves, whereas trans women and cisgender sisters were rated by their siblings in a less sex-typed way than they viewed themselves.

samenvatting:	This study uses comparative literature review and narrative analysis to examine the experiences of non-binary individuals living in the Netherlands. The research involved in depth-interviews with twelve Dutch narrators who do not exclusively identify as male or female. Previous studies have mainly focused on binary transgender people with research from a medical perspective. Sociological research with non-binary individuals are scarce, especially research on non-binary individuals in the Netherlands is lacking. In this research it is shown how agender, genderqueer, femme, non-binary, non-binary and man, genderfluid and people who do not prefer a gender identity term make their identity heard in a gender binary society. Words that reflect their identity is much needed to make their identities visible. They invent language themselves, but a collective effort is to create new words is needed to make non-binary individuals in the Netherlands heard more rapidly. Awareness need to be raised about gender diversity and language needs to be created to reflect the identities of all genders.

samenvatting:	Stephen Varble was "considered by some the embarrassment of SoHo, and by others the only touch of real genius south of Houston street". With these words, the art critic Gregory Battcock captured the contradictory appeal of this disruptive, driven artist. In elaborate, gender-confounding costumes made from street trash, food waste, and found objects, Varble erupted into New York?s streets. In his "Costume Tours of New York" in 1975 and 1976, he would lead onlookers on unauthorized visits to art galleries and other sites of commercial luxury. Without warning, Varble would appear as a vision of transformed trash in a dress of milk cartons, chicken bones, and pipe cleaners. A pantomimed performance would end with a swooning bow that spilled milk out onto a gallery floor, with him sweeping out to lead viewers to the next confrontation with art's commerce. Exhibition opened Sept. 29, 2018 and ran through Jan. 6, 2019 at the Leslie-Lohman Museum.

samenvatting:	The field of gender affirming medical interventions now rests on over one hunderd years of modern medical history, with the " masculinisation surgery" (and subsequent legal recognition as male by the state of Prussaia) of Herman Karl recorded in 1882. This history owes much to practitioners willing to challenge social and medical expectations regarding sex/gender, yet this was in parallel with the uglier legacy of infexible gatekeeping practices. For the sake of this editorial I define non-binary people as those who do not identify (exclusively) as male or female. I also use this as an unbrella term which is inclusive of people who identify as genderqueer, agender/neutrois, and culturally sepcific conceptualizations of gender that exist outside of the Westernized gender binary. Language and identity are in a constant of evolution, with many other terms used to capture particular experiences of (non-binary) gender. For example, genderfluidity indicates a sense of gender which varies over time. A bigender identity involves the experience of two gender identities ? either simultaneously or varying (and so therefore may be fluid, or not). Before addressing the ramifications of the history of trans medicine, and developments in gender affirming medicine that are associated with non-binary people, it is necessary to unpack the ontology of non-binary and the implications of the above definition in regards to community identity politics. This allows a rigorous foundation for nuanced, sensitive, and flexible medical practice.
